Moving and Packing Tips for Easy Relocation

Moving day is fast approaching and you realize you can no longer put off the packing process. Do you have enough boxes? How about those fragile items and family heirlooms? These are just some of the questions that will go through your head as moving day fast approaches. Plan ahead and reduce the risks of experiencing disasters on the day of your big move. Below are some helpful moving and packing tips to get you ahead.

Plan Early, Start Early

Start planning early because packing for moving or relocation always takes longer than anticipated. Before getting started, consider what needs extra careful packing, as well as the things you don’t necessarily need to take along with you. Are you covered for potential item breakages? Remember to pack sensibly.

Spend enough time considering how you can go about packing your possessions. Valuables and heirlooms need careful wrapping and furniture may need to be disassembled. Some items will be easier to wrap, some will take time, some will be heavy, and some will need very careful packaging.

You may not need to pack all your clothes (especially if you have too many), and if possible, finish all your laundry before your big move. Avoid packing damp clothes; otherwise, keep a separate box for your dirty laundry.

Create a Priority Checklist

Now this is a must-do in all moving and packing tips you may read or encounter. Take some time to assess your belongings to so you can formula tea clear-cut plan for packing all your stuff. For the things you can easily replace or do without, put them in a box and donate them to charity. If you have extra time, you can set up a garage sale or sell them through an online auction. You can use the proceeds to decorate your new home or buy upgraded items.

Unless you have a very small household, expect that you will not be able to unpack everything in your first day at your new home. Thus, it is wise to decide before hand which things you need easy-access to as soon as you have moved. Make sure that the boxes containing the items you need the most are loaded on the moving truck last so you can also unload them first. This should include your family’s ‘essentials’ box, overnight bags, as well as some other items you may need to keep close at hand such as flash lights, first-aid kit, medicines, pen and paper, mini tool kit, tissue paper, plastic bags, etc.

Your essentials’ box should contain all the things you need for your first day or night in your new home – your everyday-use plates, cups, utensils, portable stove, kitchen essentials, snacks, and easy-to-prepare food items.

Your overnight bag should include a day or two’s clothing, toiletries, towels, and enough toilet paper for everyone.

Prepare Everything

Prepare the things you will need before hand so you will not have such a hard time packing. How many boxes will you need? Where can you get them? One thing you really need to know regarding moving and packing tips is that moving boxes come in a variety of types and sizes. (Note: Corrugated cardboard boxes are sturdier than regular ones, and specialty boxes are better for fragile pieces.)

Consider other things you will need such as bubble wrap, old newspapers(for lining boxes), packaging tape, paper and marker (for labeling), and some self-seal bags (for storing cords, nuts and bolts, and/or other minute items).

Have a separate storage box for packing important documents, such as marriage and birth certificates, land and property titles, etc. Also put all hazardous materials, such as aerosols, perfumes, paint, etc. in a separate box, and secure them properly and keep away from the rest of your items.

Make sure that your contents insurance covers all possible breakages and damages during your move-in day.

Start Packing!

As a rule of thumb, don’t fill large boxes completely or they will be too unwieldy. Pack heavy items in smaller boxes and use extra-durable packing materials. Make sure you wrap and seal everything securely, and if possible, use bubble wrap as lining. Towels and blankets also make useful materials for wrapping valuables as well as protecting furniture from dents or scratches. Pack heavier and non-fragile items on the bottom of the box and the lighter ones on the top.

Wrap small items individually, and if possible, use tissue paper or unprinted wrapping paper to avoid leaving marks on valuables. (Newspaper may leave stain son your precious china!). Label boxes containing breakables as ‘Fragile’ and ‘This side up’. This will tell the movers that they need to be careful when handling the boxes.

Other Useful/ Important Moving and Packing Tips:

Organize your packing process by beginning at the top of your house moving downwards. Label each box clearly with the box’s contents and the particular room it belongs to. Pack one room at a time, and load all boxes for each room together in the moving truck to save you time when you finally unpack.
